Discussion:

2 Chronicles 6:40–7:2 KJV 1900
Now, my God, let, I beseech thee, thine eyes be open, and let thine ears be attent unto the prayer that is made in this place. Now therefore arise, O Lord God, into thy resting place, thou, and the ark of thy strength: let thy priests, O Lord God, be clothed with salvation, and let thy saints rejoice in goodness. O Lord God, turn not away the face of thine anointed: remember the mercies of David thy servant. Now when Solomon had made an end of praying, the fire came down from heaven, and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices; and the glory of the Lord filled the house. And the priests could not enter into the house of the Lord, because the glory of the Lord had filled the Lord’s house.
Why do you think Solomon and the people were so diligent in preparing the Temple?
Why do you think God honored Solomon and the people with His presence?
Ezra 3:12 KJV 1900
But many of the priests and Levites and chief of the fathers, who were ancient men, that had seen the first house, when the foundation of this house was laid before their eyes, wept with a loud voice; and many shouted aloud for joy:

Honoring God with Our Lives

Holiness in a believer’s life stems from a desire to honor God.
As we move closer to God, we separate ourselves from the world.
1 Peter 1:13–16 KJV 1900
Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance: But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.
Why does the Lord call us to be holy? (verse 16) ___________________________________________________________
In what specific way does the Lord call us to be holy in verse 15? ___________________________________________________________
What are some ways in which we can be holy in our conduct? ___________________________________________________________
Peter establishes the elements with four parameters
Prepare your mind for the effort that will be required to keep it focused on the things of God?
Exercise self-control
Let all your hope be in the grace of God to accomplish this
Be obedient (trusting as a child) to the things of God that you are learning now instead of living sinfully as when you were ignorant of God’s plans and desires for you.
Holiness: Set apart unto unto God. Consecration: Dedicated to God for a specific purpose.
The Children of Abraham
Genesis 12:1–3 KJV 1900
Now the Lord had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will shew thee: And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.

Set apart unto God or Separated from the World?

Our motivation for holiness must be our desire to be closer to God.
As we get closer to Him, we will separate from the world.
God commands holiness.
2 Corinthians 6:16–7:1 KJV 1900
And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty. Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.
What did the Lord Instruct us not to touch? (verse 17) ___________________________________________________________
What two things should we cleanse ourselves from? (2 Corinthians 7:1) ___________________________________________________________
How can holiness be perfected in a person’s life? ___________________________________________________________
Difference between being separated from the world and set apart unto God. The changing vs the unchanging..
Legalism and rule making: “Rules without relationship...”
We should want to please our heavenly father from a heart of love for him.
Rules for children in the home.

Set apart unto God for a Purpose

God has a purpose for each person He saves.
We are not only called to be holy, but to serve the Lord with our gifts and talents that He has given us.
Exodus 29:1–4 NIV
“This is what you are to do to consecrate them, so they may serve me as priests: Take a young bull and two rams without defect. And from the finest wheat flour make round loaves without yeast, thick loaves without yeast and with olive oil mixed in, and thin loaves without yeast and brushed with olive oil. Put them in a basket and present them along with the bull and the two rams. Then bring Aaron and his sons to the entrance to the tent of meeting and wash them with water.
What was required of the priests before they were able to minister before the Lord? (verses 1 & 4) ___________________________________________________________
Why do you think God required a process of making holy those who served Him? ___________________________________________________________
How do you think this principle compares to our lives today? ___________________________________________________________
Holiness isn’t just about what we don’t do, but it’s about what we do also. Usually if someone isn’t willing to serve, it’s a indication of a problem somewhere in their relationship with God.
Jesus told all of those called, “Go ye into all the world”
The utensils in the tabernacle were consecrated but they were used, not just put on display.

God’s Purpose in Calling His people to Holiness

To understand God’s purpose for holiness in our lives, we need to understand the nature of sin and temptation.
When we understand the nature of sin and God’s ultimate purpose for our lives, we should embrace God’s mandate of holiness.
James 1:13–15 KJV 1900
Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.
What is the final result of sin? (verse 15) ___________________________________________________________
Who bears responsibility for being tempted? (verse 14) ___________________________________________________________
What steps can we take when we face temptation? ___________________________________________________________
God doesn’t hate sin because He is so holy and perfect or because the effect it has on Him. God hates sin because of the effect it has on us! It kills that which He loves. Why does God hate Satan? Holiness is not just about being better than the world, being a better Christian , or conforming to a list of do’s and don’ts to be good people. It’s because of God’s intense love that doesn’t want us to go to a devil’s hell...
